Praxis art actuel

Call To Artists
« The Spirit Of The Thing » is an exploration of Art that deals with spirituality. I asked a friend if he was religious. His reply was one that is heard often now; « No but I am spiritual. ». I want this exhibit to reach for some explanation as to what the word spiritual means in this context. Does being spiritual have some loosely defined form of dogma? How is it practiced? Or is this just a way to avoid the matter of religion altogether? Have we as a western society become so jaded by our religious traditions that we have rejected their ways, but don’t want to be viewed as having no concept as to what is before and after these short stays in our fleshy carcasses? Has history showed us the political truth of religious societies; A truth of war, intolerance, and abuse in the name of their deities? Have we re-examined religious literature to come to the conclusion that indeed it is literature and not dogma? So we have on mass vacated the houses of religion, but what have we replaced them with? These are the questions I want to see your answers to.
The exhibit will take place in *New* Gallery in the middle of the Queen West art district, during the month of July. *New* gallery is an Artist collective as well as a rental gallery. The fees are very reasonable and with enough Artists involved to share the expense the cost would be nominal. For more information please e mail me, Kurt Rostek, lokart [arobas] sympatico [point] ca .
Submissions by email only. Send 3-5 jpegs of recent work, and an Artist Statement. All media acceptable. Send all submissions to Kurt Rostek, lokart [arobas] sympatico [point] ca

Gimli Film Festival: Call to Filmmakers, Deadline June 15
‘My Gimli’ Short Film Contest – Gimli Film Festival
June 15, 2010
CALL FOR ENTRIES – ‘MY GIMLI’ SHORT FILM CONTEST
‘My Gimli’ Short Film Contest
Gimli Film Festival
July 21-25, 2010
Gimli, Manitoba
In 2007, filmmaker Guy Maddin released his much-lauded pseudo-documentary My Winnipeg, a portrait of his hometown that was notoriously light on hard fact, but filled to bursting with style, humor and what Maddin characterized as « emotional truth » – a sort of truth that perhaps hits closer to home than the more traditional kind. Now the Gimli Film Festival would like your help to apply those same qualities to its own bailiwick. What is it about the small lakeside town of Gimli that has attracted and inspired so many filmmakers and film lovers over the years? In the early days of cinema, Hollywood pioneers chose the Manitoba immigrant community as a setting for their 1917 epic Wild Goose Chase. The town achieved Midnight Movie fame with Guy Maddin’s Tales from the Gimli Hospital, and it has created a thriving film festival. The Gimli Film Festival’s My Gimli Short Film Contest aims to both highlight and continue this tradition. Clearly there is something special about Gimli, and the challenge that participants in this contest will face is how best to express it on film in five minutes or less.
We invite filmmakers to create a short tribute to, or history of the town – with actual historical facts being completely optional of course. Your film may be shot in Gimli or in Timbuktu, as long as that Gimli spirit is somehow captured. You yourself need not have ever set foot in the town – invention, concoction and outright fabrication are all very much allowed here. It’s the spirit that counts.
Films will be judged on two main points: pure cinematic quality and the effectiveness with which it captures and communicates the essence of Gimli. The decision of the jury will be considered final. Guest judges will be Jody Shapiro, Norma Bailey, and Guy Maddin.
Eligibility: The film must be no longer than five minutes in length.
Deadline: The film must be received by June 15, 2010, and the winner will be declared on July 7, 2010.
Award: The winner will receive The My Gimli Award, one-night stay at the Lakeview Resort and an All Access Pass to the festival.
Delivery: Your film must be sent as a Quicktime file to mygimli [arobas] gimlifilm [point] com. Films not received on time or in a viewable quality will not be considered.
Questions can be directed to 204-642-8846 or info [arobas] gimlifilm [point] com

Saint Norbert Arts Centre: Call to Visual Artists, Deadline May 20
Call for Submission: STONE AGE
Saint Norbert Arts Centre (SNAC) is now accepting submissions for their upcoming Stone Age exhibition.
Open to Manitoba artists, Stone Age will feature artistic creations inspired by the words “stone age”, to be interpreted in any which way captures the artist’s imagination. The stone is said to have once been a sacred gathering place for bison, an ancient geographic anomaly said to have been deposited during the ice age.
The new location for the stone is at the newly planned Medicine Wheel garden on SNAC property, where it can be visited by all in perpetuity and become a place of healing.
The overall artistic intent of the exhibition is to benefit creatively from the tragedy of displacement of this once venerated object, and to use this accident of circumstance as a tool for healing and contemplation. The Doris McCarthy Gallery, University of Toronto Scarborough
Call to Artists for Expression of Interest
Permanent Public Art Work – UTSC Instructional Centre, designed by Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc.
An Instructional Centre is being built at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), marking an exciting new phase of campus expansion and a bold new addition to a campus that already boasts internationally celebrated architecture. With an expected completion date of March 2011, the new facility will support the emergence of UTSC as a vital hub for cultural and intellectual activity in the eastern region of the Greater Toronto Area.
The Instructional Centre will be a major, publicly accessible building at UTSC and will integrate community life with the campus. The building will house high-quality classrooms; research, teaching and computer labs; staff and faculty offices; and study spaces. The site selected for the Instructional Centre — the intersection of Military Trail and Ellesmere Road — will become the core for activity on an expanded north campus. Planned mixed-use facilities located at the street level and near-by will include: retail shops, restaurants, cafés, an athletics complex, and a stop for Light-Rail Rapid Transit (LRT), creating a highly animated street front that will be attractive to students as well as to the community.
This major infrastructure project provides UTSC with an opportunity to commission a permanent, public artwork to be installed in the four-storey atrium of the building. The atrium itself, and the public space surrounding it, will be a meeting point, study area, and a spatial organizer for the building. The project budget is $175,000, which includes all fabrication and installation costs and fees. Construction of the building is underway and is expected to be complete by March 2011.
This inaugural, major public art commission furthers UTSC’s ongoing commitment to contemporary art. As evidenced by the recent announcement of UTSC’s participation in the 2015 Pan and Parapan American games, the University of Toronto Scarborough continues to reach an increasingly international audience.
The Doris McCarthy Gallery, University of Toronto Scarborough is inviting local, national and international Artists or Artist Teams to submit:
* Resume(s);
* 6-8 visuals of recent, relevant work**; and
* Artist’s statement outlining interest in the project and experience.
**Please submit digital images on CD listing title, date, materials and dimensions for each work. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of submission material, if desired.
Please note: Artists are NOT asked to submit proposals at this stage of the competition.
Submissions must be received in a sealed envelope bearing the name and address of the Proponent by 5:00 p.m., Local Time, Monday, May 31, 2010 at the following address only:
Procurement Office, Financial Services
University of Toronto Scarborough
Portable PO102, Room 103
1265 Military Trail
Toronto, Ontario CANADA
M1C 1A4
Submissions received after the above closing time will not be considered and will be returned.
Facsimile or electronic submissions, or modifications to submissions shall not be considered.
This project will be administered by the Doris McCarthy Gallery, UTSC. The artwork concept will be selected through a two-stage open competition, by a Selection Committee convened for this project, which will include practicing arts professionals as well as representatives from the UTSC community.
A short list of 3-5 artists will be paid a fee to develop a project proposal based on a Terms of Reference document provided to the short-listed artists by UTSC.
The Selection Committee will finalize its decision in November 2010.

Artist in Residency 2011 – Hotel MariaKapel /Netherlands
invites aritists, curators and researchers to submit proposals for our 2011 programme.
http://www.hotelmariakapel.nl/
About HMK
Hotel Mariakapel is an artist-run residency and project space in Hoorn, a 16th century town by the IJsselmeer, just 40 km north of Amsterdam. In the old center of the town, in a medieval orphanage with adjacent inner garden and
Maria Chapel, Hotel Mariakapel receives artists from all over the world.
The programme involves artists and curators working in a wide range of media, focusing on installation and context based work, video/film and performance art. Projects are developed both in public space and in the chapel’s
exhibition space. Hotel MariaKapel is kindly supported by Hoorn City Council, the Province of Noord-Holland, and the Mondriaan Foundation.
Things to consider when applying:
When sending in a proposal for an artistic or curatorial project, please take in careful consideration the specific context of Hotel MariaKapel. The context of HMK includes the possibility to work with a group of artists; a small town setting (eg, absence of a big local art scene/discourse); the combination of a locally rooted initiative with exhibitions of national appeal. We strongly advise you to read into the context of HMK (and Hoorn) prior to submitting a proposal.
HMK has a strong preference for two types of projects:
1 – Projects that make full use of the unique opportunities offered by the presence of a guesthouse and a longer stay, for instance intensive (international) collaboration or developing a new strand of work
2 – Projects challenging, bending or ignoring logic, socio-economic relations and/or artistic conventions in an engaging manner.
Artists, art historians or curators who temporarily require a base in The Netherlands or who need a change of setting for a while may apply. We aim to offer a small per diem budget, free use of the guesthouse and its facilities, possible reimbursement for travel costs. We do ask that you give a presentation that suits your research, prior to your departure. We especially welcome research proposals coming from artists.
Accommodation and living facilities are provided for invited artists or artists groups to complete a period of work culminating in a final exhibition in the adjacent exhibition space. Residencies vary in length and depend on the nature of the work; we feel between one and two months is a good duration. The length of the residency is agreed in advance. The resulting exhibitions which are open to the public, usually take place for 3-4 weeks.
Hotel Mariakapel is responsible for all mail-outs and promotional activity in relation to the shows, which include regional, national and international contacts.
The residency includes use of all facilities (private room, wireless internet, shared kitchen, washing machine / dryer, basic tools, some audio & video equipment ). We can host 8 people in 4 bedrooms, you might be sharing a room.
Hotel MariaKapel provides a budget to resident artists (travel, materials, fee, some living costs) , depending on individual projects, but advises artists to secure additional funding elsewhere.
How to Apply:
1.Read our´- OPEN CALL 2011 – ( this text, you just read! )
2.Read our application formcarefully!
