La Maison des artistes visuels accepte présentement des soumissions pour une œuvre sculpturale éphémère dans le Jardin de sculptures.  L’œuvre peut être travaillée sur les lieux et demeurera sur le site du 15 juillet au 30 août 2012. L’artiste choisi recevra un cachet d’artiste de 1545$. Le coût des matériaux associé à la création de l’œuvre est la responsabilité de l’artiste.

Appel de dossiers

Oeuvre lumineuse intégrée à l’architecture
Date limite : 22 juin 2012

L’Écart invite les artistes et les collectifs à soumettre un projet d’œuvre lumineuse intégrée à l’architecture de son bâtiment. Il s’agit d’un projet de façade comme plate-forme de création pour présenter le travail d’un artiste en arts visuels. Six enseignes lumineuses seront à la disposition d’un artiste professionnel qui concevra un projet artistique cadrant dans ces boîtiers. Grâce à une subvention spéciale de la Ville de Rouyn-Noranda qui s’autoproclame capitale culturelle, L’Écart réalise ce projet d’œuvre permanente et durable vouée au rayonnement du dynamisme artistique et culturel de la ville. L’œuvre sera renouvelée tous les 4 ans.

3 artistes seront sélectionnés afin de proposer un montage graphique de leur projet de façade. Cette sélection se fera par dossiers d’artistes.

Le centre recherche des artistes qui œuvrent à renouveler les pratiques, qui démarchent à rendre perméables les frontières entre les disciplines, qui développent des stratégies de diffusion inédites et des pratiques qui tiennent compte des spécificités régionales (actualité, territoire, société, histoire, etc.).
2. Projet ponctuel ou spontané

Mandat artistique : La Maison des artistes visuels francophones (MDA) est un centre d’artistes en art actuel œuvrant avec la communauté francophone du Manitoba, la communauté francophone élargie et toutes les instances qui interagissent avec elles. Elle soutient la diffusion d’œuvres dans toutes les disciplines par des expositions, des échanges, des ateliers et des résidences d’artistes. Elle offre un soutien particulier aux artistes émergents dans la présentation de leurs premières expositions, et un cadre adapté pour les propositions d’artistes plus établis et pour les commissaires. Elle s’appuie sur un dialogue critique dans l’orientation de sa programmation et de ses projets. À travers le réseautage et les partenariats, la Maison des artistes encourage l’ouverture aux formes d’expression venues d’ailleurs pour dynamiser la communauté. Pour promouvoir la professionnalisation de ses membres, elle organise des formations et des causeries.
Vous êtes invités à soumettre une proposition d’exposition en art actuel pour l’année de programmation 2013-2014.
Critères de soumissions :
• avoir une formation spécialisée dans le domaine ou être reconnu par ses pairs ou être artiste émergent en art contemporain ou commissaire avec un projet à soumettre
• avoir la capacité de communiquer en français

Appel de textes pour esse no 77, dossier Indignation

Ce numéro se veut d’abord l’écho des bouleversements sociaux et politiques qui ont pris forme depuis 2011 et que rien, d’ailleurs, ne semble vouloir essouffler. Le « Printemps arabe » en est un déclencheur avec tous ces pays, à commencer par la Tunisie, dont les peuples se sont insurgés, dans la rue contre des gouvernements tyranniques et autoritaires qu’ils ont parfois réussi à déloger du pouvoir. Ce printemps-là de 2011, sur fond de crise économique, allait voir naître aussi le mouvement des indignés qui, de ville en ville, en Espagne, aux États-Unis et au Québec entre autres, ont occupé les espaces publics pour décrier pacifiquement les inégalités sociales impunément créées par les marchés financiers avec la complicité des gouvernements. Porté par le slogan « Nous sommes le 99 % », ce mouvement qui a proliféré jusqu’à l’automne appelait à la résistance.

Dans ce contexte, qu’en est-il des artistes et de l’art ? Le Printemps arabe a-t-il contribué a considérer davantage les arts du monde arabe par l’Occident (par exemple leur plus grande représentativité à la Biennale de Venise en 2011) ? Les artistes des pays arabes en révolte, de même que ceux provenant de d’autres régimes répressifs tels la Chine ou la Russie, traitent-ils des luttes pour la démocratie dans leurs oeuvres, témoignent-ils des affrontements vécus et de leurs réalités culturelles ? Connaissent-ils un changement quant à leur droit d’expression? Quelle est l’efficacité de l’art dans de tels contextes ? Du côté de nos sociales-démocraties où la permissivité est grande, comment se joue le désir de transgresser et quels sont les nouveaux motifs de résistance de l’artiste ?

Les jeux de La Francophonie
Appel lancé aux artistes pour les Jeux de la Francophonie de 2013

FREDERICTON (GNB) – Les jeunes artistes du Nouveau-Brunswick ont l’occasion de faire partie d’Équipe Canada Nouveau-Brunswick et de participer volet culturel international des VIIes Jeux de la Francophonie, qui se tiendront à Nice, en France, du 6 au 15 septembre 2013.

« J’invite tous les jeunes artistes du Nouveau-Brunswick à participer aux concours culturels, qui constituent un volet important des Jeux », a déclaré le ministre de la Culture, du Tourisme et de la Vie saine, Trevor Holder. « Pour les artistes du Nouveau-Brunswick, il s’agit non seulement d’une aventure culturelle, mais aussi d’une occasion de se mesurer aux autres concurrents et de faire valoir leurs talents sur la scène internationale. »

Les critères de sélection sont fondés sur la qualité du travail de l’artiste, et la compétition est ouverte à tous les Néo-Brunswickois. La date limite pour présenter sa candidature est le 20 juillet.

« C’est un honneur pour le Nouveau-Brunswick de participer aux Jeux de la Francophonie de 2013 », a affirmé le ministre du Développement économique, Paul Robichaud, qui est également ministre responsable de la Francophonie. « Cette manifestation sportive et culturelle internationale revêt une importance particulière pour notre province, car elle nous donne une occasion spéciale de mettre en valeur nos talents artistiques et de célébrer notre patrimoine culturel unique et diversifié. »

Les artistes âgés de 18 à 35 ans peuvent participer au volet culturel des Jeux dans l’une des 11 disciplines suivantes : arts de la rue (marionnettes, jonglerie ou hip hop), peinture, sculpture, chanson, conte, danse de création, littérature (nouvelle), photographie et création numérique.

Les Jeux rassemblent des milliers de jeunes des pays et gouvernements de la Francophonie qui excellent dans des activités sportives ou culturelles. Ils se tiennent tous les quatre ans. Les derniers Jeux ont eu lieu à Beyrouth, au Liban, en 2009.

La délégation canadienne est composée de trois équipes : Canada, Canada-Nouveau-Brunswick et Canada-Québec.

Confederation Centre Art Gallery seeks submissions from Canadian artists for permanent outdoor sculpture
The Confederation Centre Art Gallery (CCAG) is seeking preliminary proposal submissions from Canadian artists for a landmark permanent outdoor artwork to be installed on the plaza of the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, P.E.I. The work, to be completed and unveiled by July 2014, will commemorate the Confederation Centre’s 50th anniversary. The work should respond to the Centre’s mandate to celebrate the evolution of the country and to inspire through the visual arts, an appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of Canada’s diverse cultural heritage through an enhancement of the Centre’s public space. The selected work would update and complement existing outdoor sculptures and architecture. This is a major, national-level commission, with projects able to draw upon a commission budget of up to $200,000 for artist fees, fabrication, engineering consultation, shipping, and installation expenses. Preliminary proposal submissions are due July 15, 2012.
Selection will be determined through a two-tier process. An advisory council with national representation will select a shortlist of approximately five proposals in August 2012. Shortlisted artists will be asked to provide further elaboration of proposals, as well as models, by October 2012. Shortlisted proposals will be exhibited in December 2012. Public input, final selection and budget approval will follow early in 2013.
About the Confederation Centre of the Arts:
Confederation Centre of the Arts was founded in 1964 as Canada’s National Memorial to the Fathers of Confederation, who gathered at Province House in 1864 to discuss the creation of our country.
Every Canadian played a part in the establishment of the Centre: each province and the federal government committed 15 cents per capita for a total of $5.6-million to construct the huge building. This was the first time that all provinces agreed to give money for an institution outside their boundaries.
Covering an entire city block, the Centre stands on what was the site of the old Charlottetown marketplace. It houses several theatres, an art gallery, restaurant, and a gift shop. Open year-round, it showcases the best in Canadian visual and performing arts.
Confederation Centre is the result of a dream shared by all Canadians – to create a place where our country’s history and multicultural character is celebrated, and where the talents of its people are nurtured and showcased.
Submission Requirements
Eligibility
•    The 2014 Confederation Centre of the Arts 50th Anniversary Public Sculpture Commission is open to Canadian artists. To be eligible, artists must be Canadian citizens or have permanent residency status in Canada.
•    Only artists with a record of experience in the creation of permanent public art will be considered for the commission.
Requirements
•    Proposals must be for permanent works that will take into account seasonal conditions and be viewable for the whole year.
•    They must also be accessible at all times of the day. Lighting and durability must therefore be considerations for all submissions.
•    Proposals should present limited ongoing costs and maintenance requirements.
•    Successful proposals need not necessarily be monumental in scale, but should have a significant visual impact on the environment of the Confederation Centre plaza and architecture.
•    Proposals should respond to the Confederation Centre’s mandate, representing excellence in Canadian contemporary art, as well as its existing architectural and sculptural context. They should also consider the thematics around the Centre’s role as a national cultural centre and monument to Canadian confederation.
•    Preference will be given to new works that respond to the specifics of the commission.
•    Proposals must ultimately meet safety standards, electrical codes and other reasonable feasibility requirements for acceptance.

Underground is a video based art project that gives willing
participants the rare opportunity to record a private on-camera
confession and broadcast it publicly over 300 of Toronto’s
digital subway platform screens.

>From July 2nd – July 15th, video confessions will be screened
daily throughout Toronto’s underground subway system,
intersecting with the daily comings-and-goings of commuter
traffic.

Sound terrifying? Yes, probably. But who knows? It could also
be exhilarating, cathartic, perhaps even liberating.

With access to over 1-million daily subway commuters,
confessors take on the potential “risk” of being recognized by
passerby. While names will NOT be disclosed on screen, visual
identities will. And that’s the exciting part; the risky part; the real
challenge. Maybe you want that ONE person to discover that
ONE secret you’ve been hiding from them for years? Or maybe
you just want the chance to finally share your secret with others?
Either way, the platform is yours….

At its core, this project attempts to exmaine the “collective” act
of confessing by exploring some deeply rooted questions: What
if we could confess our secrets on a mass-scale? What if we
could confess with the support of a large group? Would that
make it easier for us to come clean? Would we even want to?

Once again, Vtape’s award-winning Curatorial Incubator™ invites applications from emerging curators who want to delve deeply into the work of a single video artist.

In 2011, we supported the research of Vancouver-based Allison Collins who put together an exhibition of the work of Susan Britton, one of the original founders of Vtape whose work had been out of distribution and thus out of the public eye for over 15 years. This year Julia Paoli, a recent graduate of the Centre for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, assembled a compelling series of installation and single channel works by Berlin-based Canadian artist Aleesa Cohene.

The successful applicant will hone curatorial skills in the media arts through workshops, independent research and writing, culminating in a public presentation of their selected programme, accompanied by a fully illustrated publication that takes the form a major (5000 word) monograph on the work of the selected artist.

PARTY OF ONE: going solo is an exciting opportunity for an emerging curator to work directly with an artist, looking at their complete body of work and respond in a variety of possible ways:

>by selecting works that focus attention onto an (as yet) little known or under-appreciated artist

TIMELINE
Research phase (July – August 2012)

*workshops conducted by established curators, artists and arts professionals specializing in media arts;
*free access to the vast research facilities on site at Vtape, with over 4000 tapes by 800+ artists and over 2000 articles on video art; and
*practical instruction from various Vtape professional staff to assist in producing a media arts exhibition.

Presentation phase (January – February 2013) includes:
*an exhibition of all the curated programmes with an introduction by the curator, and, when possible, a public discussion with the artist present; and
*a fully illustrated monograph with a significant (5000 word) essay) about the work of the artist, with editing provided by an arts professional.

PLATFORM announces a call for submissions for film + video in response to the theme of the palimpsest. A screening will be presented in conjunction with PLATFORM’s palimpsest year and will take place in the Artspace Building.

Taking our cue from the historical phenomenon of the palimpsest as a scroll or text that is written only to be erased in order to make room for the inscription of new ideas, PLATFORM is currently in a year-long investigation into how photography and its sister media, film and video, can act as contemporary palimpsests or re-writable texts. Winnipeg is a prairie city where you can see a snowstorm coming three days away. The flatness of our location holds with the possibility that we take in not only the periphery but also the past and future. palimpsest, should not be mistaken as a sentimental elucidation about the past. It explores a rhizomatic vision of past, present, and future in various simultaneous possibilities.

Founded in 1984, the biennial VIDEONALE today counts as one of the oldest and most renowned festivals of video art in the world. To this day VIDEONALE sees itself as a festival of national and international video art, both for ambitious young artists and for established artists.

EXHIBITION
At the 14th VIDEONALE between 40 and 50 works, chosen by an international jury of experts, will be presented during a seven-week exhibition in the Kunstmuseum Bonn. They will be supplemented by a curated section of video installations.
FESTIVAL
The numerous events of next year’s programme are meant to tempt visitors to VIDEONALE 14. In addition to the three-day opening programme, a large number of lectures, discussions with artists, screenings, performances, workshops and special presentations about artistic positions will take place during the seven weeks of the exhibition. We live in a unique moment in history, between two rapidly changing worlds. One is the world of decaying political and economic structures and the other is the world of an infinite explosion in technology and information. There are conflicting mindsets in every part of our culture: the contradiction between ubiquitous virtual presence and physical presence creating an identity crisis; the non-hierarchical, organic web structure clashing with hierarchical, non-organic real-world structures; the myth of the individual as a genius vs the power of the crowd and the collaborative practice; the passive and observant attitude set against active participation and co-creation. These opposing forces are placing us in a paradoxical state that we have named Unfinity.

Unfinity is a pull between these poles, a hybrid space. It’s timeless and uncertain. We believe that to ease the state of Unfinity in a human and meaningful way it is crucial to be creative, to experiment, to challenge and take action.

Alpha-ville 2012 invites artists, designers, thinkers, digital and non-digital people to consider, participate in, create and express what will be the next steps for building an alternative future that, we hope, will belong to the people.

La Station VasteMonde accueille les artistes ou les collectifs d’artistes plasticiens.
Un budget couvrant les frais de production et de rémunération est prévu, ainsi qu’un encadrement technique pour la mise en place de l’installation et son démontage. La Station prend en charge les frais d’hébergement (deux à cinq semaines) et assure la communication autour du projet. ARTISTS’ RESIDENCY PROGRAMME
OPEN CALL 2012

The Irish Museum of Modern Art is pleased to announce a new online application process for those applying to the Artists’ Residency Programme.  Applications can be made online, through IMMA’s website, from Tuesday 12 June until 13.00 GMT/Irish Time, Tuesday 24 July 2012.
Successful applications will be scheduled to participate on the Residency Programme in 2013. Residencies range between two to six months in duration.

The Artists’ Residency Programme (ARP) is the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s (IMMA) studio / residency programme. The ARP provides opportunities for artists, curators, critical writers and art professionals to research and develop their practices, it supports both emerging and established professionals, working in any medium by application or invitation and is open to Irish and international applicants.

The ARP is a unique programme which is immersed in the urban context of contemporary Irish culture. Situated onsite at IMMA, this prime location offers a natural catalyst for creativity and dialogue. The Museum’s Collection, Exhibitions, Education and Community Programmes, National Programme, Talks and Lectures, and 17th-century architecture and grounds all provide a dynamic starting point for participants to expand and explore their studio practice and potentially develop new avenues of research where IMMA residents can tap into the many resources available to them.

ARP participants have opportunities to engage in ARP Conversations and Open Studio events and they get to showcase their ongoing studio practice or previous work made by them during their residency. The live / work location onsite at IMMA offers opportunities to participants to meet with the public, art professionals, the local community and colleagues to expand practices and discourses. The ARP also provides a professional platform for international artists to come and live in Dublin for a concentrated period of time within an affordable and creative context alongside participating Irish artists.

Artists participating in the Residency Programme receive a free studio and separate, complementary living space all located on site at IMMA. There are eight studios at IMMA, four loft spaces and four large ground floor spaces. There is a communal house called the Flanker Building which has five bedrooms, two kitchens, two bathrooms and can facilitate live-in wheel chair access on the ground floor. There are also three self-catering apartments above some of the studios. Resident artists also receive a small stipend.

Applications are evaluated by a selection committee consisting of members of staff from IMMA and external arts professionals.  The committee bases their selection on the artistic quality of the applicant’s work, the potential impact of the residency on the applicant’s career, and the relevance of the applicant’s practice to the cultural context of IMMA and contemporary art.

La résidence a pour mission d’accueillir des artistes et des écrivains étrangers qui ont un projet artistique / littéraire spécifique à développer à Paris. Dans les domaines des arts visuels et des arts de la scène, le projet doit être mené de préférence en liaison avec une institution partenaire ou une structure, ou une compagnie, ou un artiste, identifiés sur Paris et son agglomération, dans le domaine de la littérature, il doit s’inscrire dans un projet de recherche. Il doit se dérouler sur place en harmonie avec la ville d’accueil et son environnement culturel. Ce séjour, qui est pour l’artiste un moment privilégié de réflexion et de création, contribuera à la visibilité de la scène artistique internationale à Paris.

PROFIL DES CANDIDATS
Le programme des Récollets s’adresse aux artistes et écrivains à titre individuel.

Les candidats doivent :

– être engagés dans une pratique professionnelle d’un minimum de 5 ans,
– justifier de travaux antérieurs et d’un parcours professionnel déjà significatif,
– parler français ou anglais,
– se libérer de leurs activités professionnelles durant la période de résidence.

MODALITÉS ET CRITÈRES DE SÉLECTION
La sélection est effectuée par une commission consultative composée de professionnels des disciplines concernées. Une attention particulière sera portée sur la qualité du projet artistique, sur la nécessité du séjour et sur le protocole de travail envisagé. Un artiste ayant déjà bénéficié d’un accueil dans le cadre du programme des Récollets ne pourra pas représenter un nouveau projet avant 3 ans.

DURÉE DE LA RÉSIDENCE
3 mois consécutifs sans interruption. Les séjours se dérouleront de janvier à décembre 2013. Il est rappelé l’importance de séjourner aux Récollets durant ces trois mois et de limiter au maximum les déplacements à l’étranger durant sa résidence.

NATURE DE L’AIDE
L’Institut français français prend en charge une allocation de séjour forfaitaire mensuelle de 1 500 €. Cette allocation doit couvrir les frais de restauration, de séjour, les frais de transports locaux, etc.
La Ville de Paris prend en charge la location des ateliers logements à la Résidence des Récollets pour la durée du séjour.
Les ateliers/logements ne sont pas adaptés aux familles et les animaux sont interdits.
Le lauréat doit obligatoirement contracter une assurance maladie et rapatriement avant son séjour à Paris. Le voyage aller/retour reste à la charge du lauréat.

From January to June 2013 PACT Zollverein is offering a residency programme for the development and realisation of projects and productions, which is open to professional artists from Germany and abroad working in the fields of dance, media art or music. Residencies are planned individually and include a working space and local accommodation as well as financial support in the form of a weekly grant allowance and travel costs. By arrangement and subject to requirement, PACT Zollverein also offers its residents technical support and advisory assistance with press and public relations and dramaturgy.

Thanks to the support of the Ministry for Families, Children, Youth, Culture and Sports of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, residency recipients are able to receive a grant to cover their living expenses and travel costs.

Residences are awarded twice a year by an international jury.

Women’s Artist Residency at MAWA, Winnipeg, Canada (Deadline: June 29th, 2012, 4pm)

Next deadline June 29, 2012, 4pm for residencies taking place between May 1 – October 31, 2013

MAWA is offering our urban, loft-style apartment to women visual artists living outside of Winnipeg for residencies of 2-4 weeks in duration. Applicants can use this space and time for research, reflection, networking and/or production.

We will provide free accommodation.The MAWA apartment is fully furnished and includes a kitchen, a bathroom with shower, a double bed, a double futon/couch and a designated parking space. All linens and cooking utensils are provided. The apartment is located on the second floor of 611 Main Street in downtown Winnipeg. Sadly, it is a walk-up and is not wheelchair accessible.
MAWA’s apartment is a clean space that is not conducive for painting and many forms of sculpture. However, we will work with you and other Winnipeg art centres to help you gain access to the facilities and resources you need. These could include a rough studio, printmaking, video and darkroom facilities, or introductions to likeminded artists and curators.

While at MAWA, we ask that you present your work to our members in a form of your choice (screening, talk, performance, showcase of work-in-progress, etc.). In return, we will pay you a $300 artist fee.
Artists at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Equal consideration will be given to emerging and established artists. Rural Manitoba artists are especially encouraged. Imagine an urban retreat!

Résidence Suddenly est une résidence d’artistes annuelle d’une durée de deux à quatre semaines. Ses objectifs et son format varient d’une année à l’autre. Ce principe d’expérimentations et de laboratoire constitue la base du projet.

Camille Debray et Laurent Isnard, issus des Beaux Arts de Nice puis Cergy et Paris, fondent cette résidence en 2010 dans la maison de campagne familiale située à cent kilomètres de Paris en Seine-et-Marne.

La résidence accueille des artistes internationaux aux pratiques très variées : volume, installation, performance, vidéo, peinture. Des théoriciens, des critiques d’art, des commissaires d’exposition sont également présents lors de la résidence. Cette cohabitation et ces rencontres permettent d’explorer des formes et des méthodes de recherche considérant les rapports singuliers qu’entretiennent pratique et théorie dans l’art contemporain.

Atelier Topaz – résidence

Opasatika, Ontario, Canada
Le lieu
Situés au cœur de la forêt boréale, les Ateliers Topaz sont à la fois un lieu de retraite et un centre de création pour artistes, toutes disciplines confondues. L’endroit parfait pour la réflexion, l’évasion. Le groupement d’édifices fait 900 mètres carrés et repose sur 14 hectares face à la route Transcanadienne. Il donne sur un étang de deux hectares. Topaz c’est la « Route 66 » dans le nord de l’Ontario. L’endroit, modeste et nostalgique, rappelle aussi les grandes épopées de la colonisation francophone de l’Ontario. Ces studios de création ou cette résidence d’artistes, endroit idéal pour les arts visuels, sont situés au centre du Canada, à mi-chemin entre l’Atlantique et le Pacifique, là où les étoiles deviennent les topazes de la nuit.
Ce qu’on offre
D’abord l’espace et, l’espace de travail déterminés selon les besoins de l’artiste. Les espaces polyvalents permettent d’y faire de la peinture, de la sculpture, de l’installation, etc. L’atelier de menuiserie, le Bar à clou, est équipé des outils de base. Un magasin d’objets trouvés est disponible autant pour l’inspiration que pour l’utilisation dans une œuvre. Le peintre apporte ses pinceaux, le musicien son instrument et l’écrivain son ordi.

Les personnes qui séjournent aux Ateliers Topaz jouissent de l’accès à la cuisine et sont responsables de préparer leurs repas. Toutefois Laurent peut aussi leur cuisiner de petits plats typiquement canadiens-français aux besoins ou aux désirs. 

Topaz possède deux suites avec lit double et une chambre avec lit simple. Chacune possède sa salle de toilette avec douche. Ces installations évoquent admirablement le style des années 1960. 

Pour la baignade, le Lac des Cœurs se situe à deux kilomètres à l’est. Pour le canotage ou la pèche, la rivière Opasatika est deux kilomètres à l’ouest. Pour se déplacer, il y a de vieux vélos ou la marche. Pour un frais très raisonnable, votre hôte peut aussi vous conduire ou organiser un déplacement vers Kapuskasing à l’est ou vers Hearst à l’ouest. 

Les matériaux d’artistes ne sont pas disponibles dans la région. Il est donc important de faire vos achats avant votre séjour, à moins que vous travailliez avec des matériaux que l’on peut se procurer dans des magasins ordinaires ou même en nature.

The prefix ‘trans’ means to go beyond, get across, cross, exchange, change and convert. The Residence Program provides a time and place for artists to experience new encounters and carry out experiments to guide their their future projects. On-going Light- Work Int’l Artist-In-Residence Program, photography & digital media

Each year Light Work invites 12-15 artists to participate in its residency program, including one artist co-sponsored by Autograph ABP. Artists selected for the residency program are invited to live in Syracuse for one month. They receive a $4,000 stipend, an apartment to stay in, a private digital studio, a private darkroom, and 24-hour access to our facility.

Participants in the residency program are expected to use their month to pursue their own projects: photographing in the area, printing for a specific project or book, and so on. Artists are not obligated to teach at our facility, though we hope that the artists are friendly and accessible to local artists. Work produced by the Artists-in-Residence will also be published in Light Work’s publication Contact Sheet.

Our color-managed digital imaging lab features Macintosh workstations equipped with flatbed and film scanners. Output options include Epson 9900, 9800, and 4880 printers that can render continuous gray-scale and color prints onto a broad variety of materials. Artists use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Macromedia Director Studio, Flash, Dreamweaver, Adobe Premiere, DVD Studio Pro software packages, iLife, and more programs. In addition, our traditional lab facility can accommodate just about any black and white process from alternative processes to mural printing.

Light Work supports artists working in photography and related media. Through our partnership with the Urban Video Project, we can also provide some direct support to video artists.

HOW TO APPLY
All artists working in photography and related media are eligible to apply to the Light Work Artist-in-Residence program. There is no application form or deadline.
Artists should submit the following:
Letter of intent, describing plans for residency
Current resume, including exhibition record
Artist statement
Around twenty images (slides, proof prints, or disk) of your most recent work or current project, plus any supporting material you feel would be appropriate in evaluating your application
Postage for the return of materials, or note to discard material after review process (international artists can include credit card information for return postage)
If you are submitting individual image files, please size the images at 2MB or less per image. Images can be sent as Tiff or JPEG files. PDF or Powerpoint presentations are equally acceptable and may exceed the 2MB file size. If possible please also send a printout of thumbnails or one or two proof prints. Please do not send books or brochures unless you are providing adequate return postage.

While we do not want to discourage anyone from applying, we are primarily interested in artists who are seriously involved with the medium of photography, and who clearly understand their intentions as an artist.

ARCA accueille favorablement le rapport Burgess
(Montréal, le 22 mai 2012) La Conférence des collectifs et des centres d’artistes autogérés (ARCA) se réjouit de la publication du rapport Burgess intitulé Le rôle distinct des centres d’artistes autogérés dans l’écologie des arts visuels. L’objectif de cette étude préparée par MDR Burgess Consultants à la demande du Service de la recherche et de l’évaluation du Conseil des Arts du Canada (CAC) consiste à permettre au CAC et, par la suite, au milieu des arts de mieux comprendre les rôles et les caractéristiques propres aux centres d’artistes autogérés (CAA).
Axée sur la façon dont les centres d’artistes autogérés se perçoivent, cette étude souligne ce qui les caractérise, mais aussi ce qui les distingue des autres acteurs dans le milieu comme les galeries commerciales et publiques, ainsi que les musées. Une discussion sur l’évolution de ces fonctions et de ces perceptions au cours des 40 dernières années fournit des renseignements précieux aux professionnels de l’art qui font leurs premières armes dans les CAA tout en permettant aux artistes et travailleurs d’expérience d’avoir un rappel de la situation.
Une analyse statistique des données fournies par des centres révèle des nombres impressionnants qui confirment certaines des observations du rapport tout en validant le travail accompli dans l’ensemble du réseau pour élargir son public grâce à une programmation variée et une diversité d’activités de sensibilisation. Une série d’entrevues approfondies avec des acteurs du secteur des arts visuels révèle à quel point le milieu dépend de l’existence des CAA partout au Canada. Le conservateur d’une galerie publique a déclaré à ce sujet : « […] la question est “que ferait-on sans les CAA?” La scène s’écroulerait complètement. Il n’y aurait plus de développement artistique, encore moins d’artistes, et plus du tout d’art actuel dans certaines régions. »
Avant même la divulgation de ces conclusions, ARCA avait déjà été mandaté par son membership de réagir à certains enjeux urgents révélés dans la conclusion de l’étude. ARCA convient que l’augmentation des ressources financières afin de soutenir le rythme de l’augmentation des coûts d’exploitation et une reconnaissance accrue de la contribution globale des CAA à la vitalité du secteur des arts visuels et de la culture canadienne demeurent des priorités constantes.
ARCA se joint à ses associations régionales et culturelles membres pour inviter tous les partenaires du réseau à faire circuler ce rapport en vue :
1. de démontrer le niveau élevé de créativité et d’ingéniosité mis à contribution dans la gestion des centres d’artistes autogérés; 
2. de reconnaître les contributions des milliers d’artistes et de professionnels du milieu des arts dans leurs communautés; 
3. d’identifier les domaines qui ont besoin d’un développement ou d’un soutien accru; 
4. de féliciter le Conseil des Arts d’avoir commandé cette étude qui fournit aux centres d’artistes des données et des renseignements objectifs en vue de poursuivre à toutes les occasions qui se présentent la promotion du rôle exceptionnel du réseau des centres d’artistes autogérés.

Ces données portent sur le soutien public direct au titre de la culture sous forme de dépenses de fonctionnement, de dépenses d’investissement et de subventions. Elles ne comprennent pas les mesures de soutien indirect, dont les crédits d’impôt. Hill Stratégies a analysé ces données pour ce numéro de Recherches sur les arts. Il faut noter que Statistique Canada a annulé récemment cette enquête pour des motifs budgétaires. Par conséquent, ces données ne seront plus collectées à l’avenir.

En 2009-2010, les trois niveaux de gouvernement ont dépensé 9,6 milliards de dollars au titre de la culture, en excluant les transferts entre les différents paliers. Ceci représente une augmentation de 20 % par rapport à 2003-2004 (en dollars constants de 2009-2010).

Les dépenses provinciales et municipales au titre de la culture ont augmenté considérablement entre 2003-2004 et 2009-2010 (28 % et 32 %, respectivement, en dollars constants). Du côté fédéral, ces dépenses ont augmenté de 8 % au cours de cette période. Ces chiffres (ainsi que tous les chiffres subséquents dans cet article) comprennent les transferts intergouvernementaux.

En 2009-2010, les dépenses fédérales au titre de la culture (y compris les transferts) étaient de 4,2 milliards (41 % des dépenses de tous les paliers de gouvernement), tandis que les provinces et les territoires ont dépensé 3,0 milliards (30 %) et les municipalités, 2,9 milliards (29 %). (Les ventilations fédérales, provinciales et municipales comprennent 0,5 milliard en transferts intergouvernementaux et ne correspondent donc pas au total de 9,6 milliards, qui ne comprend pas ces transferts.)

En se basant sur les catégories de l’ensemble de données, l’estimation des dépenses publiques au titre des arts pourrait inclure l’éducation artistique, les arts de la scène, les arts visuels et les métiers d’art (ce qui exclut les galeries d’art, qui sont classées parmi les musées dans la catégorie patrimoine). En fonction de cette définition, le soutien public pour les arts était de 827 millions en 2009-2010, ou 8 % du total des dépenses publiques au titre de la culture. C’est au niveau des provinces et des territoires que le soutien pour les arts était le plus élevé (416 millions, ou 14 % des dépenses des administrations provinciales ou territoriales au titre de la culture), suivi de l’administration fédérale (300 millions, ou 7 % des dépenses fédérales à ce chapitre). Ce niveau de détail n’est pas disponible pour les données municipales au titre des arts. Bien que l’ensemble de données comprenne de grands secteurs de dépenses municipales comme les bibliothèques, la plupart des autres dépenses municipales sont groupées dans la catégorie « Multidisciplinaires et autres activités ». (Les autres catégories, qui peuvent comprendre des dépenses « au titre des arts » des trois paliers et qui sont groupées sous l’en-tête général « industries culturelles », comprennent les films et les vidéos, les publications littéraires et artistiques, la radio et télédiffusion et les enregistrements sonores.)

La part du lion des 4,2 milliards consacrés par le gouvernement fédéral au titre de la culture en 2009-2010 est allée au secteur de la radiodiffusion (1,9 milliard ou 47 % des dépenses fédérales) et aux organismes du patrimoine, y compris les musées, les galeries d’art, les archives publiques, les parcs naturels et les sites historiques (1,2 milliard ou 29 %). Les portions les plus élevées des 3,0 milliards consacrés par les provinces en 2009-2010 sont allées aux bibliothèques (1,1 milliard ou 37 % des dépenses provinciales) et aux organismes du patrimoine (769 millions ou 25 %). Soixante-quatre pour cent du total de l’aide municipale en 2009 (1,9 milliard du total de 2,9 milliards) est allé aux bibliothèques.

Si l’on examine les dépenses par habitant, les dépenses au titre de la culture par tous les niveaux de gouvernement étaient de 301 $ par Canadien en 2009-2010. Voici les dépenses par personne de tous les niveaux de gouvernement dans les provinces en ordre décroissant :

Les dépenses fédérales au titre de la culture étaient en moyenne de 123 $ par personne en 2009-2010. Comme indiqué ci-dessous, ces dépenses étaient supérieures à 123 $ dans trois provinces et inférieures dans les sept autres :

Les dépenses municipales au titre de la culture varient grandement entre les provinces. Elles étaient en moyenne de 87 $ par personne en 2009. Les dépenses municipales par personne dans chaque province étaient les suivantes :

Le niveau des dépenses par personne est plus élevé dans les trois territoires que dans les provinces selon toutes les mesures sauf pour les dépenses municipales. À cause de leur faible population, les territoires sont exclus de l’analyse précédente. Voici des données clés pour les territoires :
•    Au Yukon, le total des dépenses publiques au titre de la culture s’élevait à 1 194 $ par personne en 2009-2010, ce qui inclut 552 $ en dépenses fédérales, 628 $ en dépenses territoriales et 13 $ en dépenses municipales.
•    Aux Territoires-du-Nord-Ouest, le total des dépenses publiques au titre de la culture s’élevait à 1 182 $ par personne en 2009-2010, ce qui inclut 888 $ en dépenses fédérales, 228 $ en dépenses territoriales et 66 $ en dépenses municipales.
•    Au Nunavut, le total des dépenses publiques au titre de la culture était de 787 $ par personne en 2009-2010, ce qui inclut 498 $ en dépenses fédérales, 279 $ en dépenses territoriales et 10 $ en dépenses municipales.
