Programme d’acquisition d’œuvres d’art autochtones 2018-2019

Le Centre d’art autochtone des Affaires autochtones et du Nord Canada (AADNC)invite les artistes autochtones à postuler afin d’être considéré pour l’édition 2018-2019 du Programme d’acquisition d’œuvres d’art autochtones par le comité d’évaluation par les pairs tel que décrit dans cet appel de soumission.

Qu’est-ce que la collection d’art autochtone?
La collection d’art autochtone, à Gatineau (Québec), est une des collections d’art traditionnel et contemporain autochtone les plus importante au pays. Depuis le début des années 1960, le Centre d’art autochtone fait la collection d’œuvres d’artistes vivants afin de constituer une collection unique en son genre représentant les pratiques artistiques qui se perpétuent dans les communautés autochtones et urbaine au travers du Canada.
La collection d’art autochtone comprend divers types d’art dont la vannerie, le perlage, la sculpture, le dessin, la peinture, l’estampe, le textile, les techniques mixtes, la photographie, etc. d’artistes autochtones de la relève ou en milieu de carrière. Depuis plus de 40 ans, le Centre d’art autochtone des Affaires autochtones et du Nord Canada fait la promotion au Canada et à l’étranger d’œuvres réalisées par des artistes autochtones canadiens, grâce à son programme de prêts d’œuvres d’art à des institutions, ses projets internationaux ainsi qu’à des centres de recherche destinés aux conservateurs et universitaires de réputation nationale et internationale.

Conditions:
·         Les artistes doivent être d’origine métisse, inuit ou membres des Premières nations.
·         Les artistes doivent être âgés de plus de 18 ans.
·         Les œuvres doivent être en excellente condition, prête à être expédier et l’auteur doit consentir à les vendre.
·         Elles doivent avoir été créées après 2012; si possible nous les acheminées: non encadrées et sans passe partout.
·         Les œuvres de tous médias sont acceptées (e.g. nouveaux médias, œuvres de pratique traditionnelle, estampe, peinture, photographie, dessin, sculpture, textile, etc.)

Les artistes doivent présenter :
Un formulaire de demande doit être rempli (Voir pièce ci-jointe ou demandez-en en contactant : aadnc [point] centredartautochtone-aboriginalartcentre [point] aandc [arobas] canada [point] ca)
·         Une liste de jusqu’à cinq œuvres et cinq images numériques
o    Format JPG seulement
o    Dimensions des images : 17,7 cm X 12,7 cm ; 7’’ x 5’’
o    Résolution : maximum 100 dpi sur CD ou par courriel
·         Une courte démarche artistique de l’artiste à propos de chaque œuvre soumise (le cas échéant)

·         S.V.P. ne pas envoyer les œuvres d’art avec le formulaire de soumission

L’imprimerie, centre d’artistes lance le Chantier de recherche sur l’image imprimée et photographique, un vaste projet de recherche-création collaboratif qui étudiera des aspects techniques, esthétiques et théoriques de la production de l’image imprimée et photographique. Fort de sa double identité, le centre désire générer des échanges entre les disciplines afin de provoquer une transformation des pratiques artistiques, au-delà du métissage technologique. Il prône l’indiscipline et la liberté de création comme moteurs d’invention.

OPTICA présente annuellement un programme varié d’expositions, de conférences et de rencontres avec les artistes et s’investit dans la production de commissariats d’expositions en relation avec les thématiques développées par le centre. L’ensemble de ces programmes propose une réflexion critique sur l’actualité de l’art, soutenue par une activité éditoriale.

Le centre comporte deux espaces d’exposition et offre une aide technique professionnelle en galerie. Les artistes et les commissaires sont invités à déposer des projets pour la programmation régulière en galerie. La nature des projets est soumise au comité de programmation qui recommande leur réalisation.

OPTICA verse des droits d’exposition aux artistes et aux commissaires selon les barèmes recommandés par le RAAV et CARFAC.

Thème : La vie des choses

Commissaire : María Wills Londoño

MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image lance son appel de dossiers d’artistes du Canada en vue de sa prochaine édition, qui se déroulera en septembre et en octobre 2019. Sous le thème La vie des choses, proposé par la commissaire indépendante colombienne María Wills Londoño, la 16e édition de la biennale présentera le travail d’une trentaine d’artistes provenant d’ici et d’ailleurs à travers plusieurs expositions.
La vie des choses
Dans un contexte économique, social et culturel où la production matérielle est omniprésente, les objets risquent à tout moment de se retrouver éphémères et de perdre leur potentiel symbolique. MOMENTA 2019 explorera le caractère, voire la personnalité, que revêt l’objet traduit par l’image. La 16e édition de la biennale présentera des artistes qui examinent la dimension métaphysique des choses, au-delà de la matière.

La manifestation mettra ainsi en lumière les univers qui se construisent entre les individus et leur environnement, en se penchant sur diverses approches qu’adoptent les artistes envers les choses : compositions, constructions, utilisations inusitées d’objets abandonnés et sculptures involontaires. Les expositions reflèteront en quoi l’être humain est un mélange de sujet et d’objet, et comment l’un peut se transformer en l’autre. L’objet finit toujours par être marqué d’une empreinte, d’un souvenir ou d’une évocation qui lui confère une certaine subjectivité.

La biennale s’articulera autour de divers axes thématiques. Les choses apparaitront comme des traces d’existence, des journaux intimes, des monuments à l’oubli. L’aspect surréel de l’objet, en tant que protagoniste d’un récit de l’absurde, sera envisagé. Le concept de « nature morte » sera problématisé au regard de la question de la mort de la nature, qui s’explique aujourd’hui par la crise environnementale mondiale. Un autre volet de la programmation portera sur l’importance culturelle de l’objet et ses potentialités en tant qu’icône, symbole ou extension d’un groupe social donné, où il acquiert parfois une signification poétique, mystique ou ésotérique. Il sera également question du corps chosifié et de l’objet qui, par des gestes humains assimilés, finit par prendre une dimension performative.

Commissaire
María Wills Londoño (Colombie) est chercheuse et commissaire d’exposition. Ses principaux travaux portent sur le caractère instable de l’image contemporaine et offrent des points de vue novateurs sur le visage urbain de l’Amérique latine. Mentionnons entre autres les expositions Urbes Mutantes, Latin Fire et Fernell Franco, Cali Clair-obscur, présentées à l’International Center of Photography de New York, à la Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain à Paris, au Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (PHotoESPAÑA), au Centro de la Imagen de Mexico et au Museo de Arte del Banco de la República à Bogota, où elle a été responsable des expositions temporaires de 2009
à 2014. Elle a également été cocommissaire des expositions Pulsions urbaines, présentée à l’Espace Van Gogh dans le cadre des Rencontres d’Arles en 2017, et Oscar Muñoz. Photographies, mise en circulation au Jeu de Paume à Paris, au Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires et au Museo de Arte de Lima, de 2011 à 2013. Londoño a fondé et dirigé jusqu’en 2018 le programme Visionarios de l’Instituto de Visión, à Bogota, destiné à réhabiliter des figures marquantes de l’art conceptuel colombien. Elle a par ailleurs collaboré à titre de cocommissaire à la foire internationale ARCO Colombia 2015 de Madrid.

ŒUVRES RECHERCHÉES

Nous sommes à la recherche d’œuvres d’artistes du Canada qui explorent les relations variées entre objets et images et qui en démontrent la complexité. Nous souhaitons approfondir, dans les différentes expositions, une multiplicité de perspectives pouvant inclure mais n’étant pas limitées à ces types de relations : symbolique, envoutante, poétique, mystique, performative, excessive, fétichiste, évocatrice, obsédante, enivrante. Nous nous intéressons à des œuvres investissant les territoires photographiques et vidéographiques, qui peuvent prendre diverses formes dont certaines plus installatives ou matérielles.
Seules les propositions liées au thème La vie des choses seront examinées. Nous vous prions de ne pas envoyer de propositions de commissariat d’exposition. Cet appel de dossiers ne concerne que les personnes ayant la citoyenneté canadienne ou la résidence permanente.

Appel de dossier 2018-2019
Centre CLARK invite les artistes, collectifs et commissaires à soumettre des propositions d’œuvres sonores pour le volet «poste audio» de sa programmation annuelle. Les propositions peuvent être adaptées à notre poste d’écoute (situé à l’entrée de CLARK) ou à en dépasser les paramètres, sans toutefois avoir besoin des salles d’exposition*. Les modes de présentation divers sont bienvenus : espace «cabane», dispositif personnel, interventions extérieures, parcours, infiltration urbaine, etc. Le comité est ouvert à recevoir toutes formes de pratiques audios (expérimentales, électroacoustiques, radiophoniques, spoken word, improvisation, etc.). Quoiqu’ouvert à la performance musicale, le comité de sélection audio désire recevoir des projets que les visiteurs du centre pourront expérimenter sur place en même temps que nos expositions présentées en galerie.

CLARK offre un cachet de 250$ pour la diffusion du travail. Nous offrons aussi une aide au montage et, si nécessaire au projet, des heures d’utilisation de l’Atelier CLARK pour la fabrication de dispositif de présentation en bois.

Toute personne voulant soumettre un dossier doit envoyer les éléments suivants sous la forme d’un document PDF :

L’École d’art d’Ottawa (ÉAO) accepte dès maintenant les soumissions de projets d’exposition pour la saison d’exposition 2019. Les œuvres en cours ou envisagées peuvent être soumises tant pour la galerie du campus du marché By que pour la galerie du campus d’Orléans. L’appel est ouvert à tous les artistes; toutes les techniques artistiques sont admissibles. Les projets d’exposition collective sont aussi acceptés.
Les artistes doivent soumettre un seul projet et indiquer dans laquelle des galeries ils désirent présenter leur exposition (marché By ou Orléans). Une seule proposition d’exposition peut être déposée pour une soumission aux deux campus. Dans le cas d’une soumission aux deux campus, vous devez indiquer de quelle façon votre exposition s’adaptera aux dimensions distinctes des deux espaces de galerie.

Soumissions :
Pour être considérées, les soumissions de projets DOIVENT inclure les renseignements ci-dessous :
1. Une description de l’exposition précisant les intentions de l’artiste et le titre de l’exposition;
2. La démarche artistique et un curriculum vitae d’expositions à jour;

Processus de sélection :
Le jury, formé de trois professionnels du domaine artistique, basera ses choix sur la qualité des œuvres, l’intégrité de l’ensemble du projet et le lien de celui-ci avec les programmes courants de l’ÉAO. (Les projets mal organisés ne seront pas considérés). Les membres du jury se rencontreront au cours des quatre semaines suivant la date limite de soumission.
• Les artistes seront informés de la décision du jury dans les deux semaines suivant la rencontre du jury.
• Les documents accompagnant la soumission pourront être récupérés au bureau de la réception de l’ÉAO à ce moment-là ou, si vous fournissez une enveloppe de retour affranchie, elle vous sera renvoyée par la poste. Les soumissions non réclamées seront détruites dans un délai de deux semaines.
• Les DC, DVD et clés USB seront renvoyés par la poste seulement si l’artiste a fourni une enveloppe de retour suffisamment affranchie.
• L’ÉAO n’assume aucune responsabilité pour les dommages causés aux DC, DVD ou clés USB, ou pour la perte de ceux-ci lors du transport par Postes Canada.
Conditions de l’exposition:

Le Concours de peintures canadiennes 2018 de RBC est en cours, et les candidatures seront acceptées jusqu’au 1er mai 2018 à 16 h (HE).

Ce concours a été créé en partenariat avec Canadian Art pour faire valoir le talent de quelques-uns des meilleurs artistes émergents au pays. Quinze finalistes profiteront d’une visibilité nationale et recevront du mentorat. Dans le cadre du 20e anniversaire du concours, le lauréat national remportera une résidence d’artiste au Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity en plus de recevoir 25 000 $. Les deux gagnants d’une mention honorable recevront 15 000 $ chacun et les 12 autres finalistes toucheront 2 500 $ chacun.

Les noms des 15 finalistes seront annoncés à la fin de juin 2018 et ceux des lauréats, le 18 septembre 2018 à la galerie The Power Plant, à Toronto (Ontario).

Call for Submissions for Holding Patterns

Art Spin is gearing up for its tenth season of programming and is looking for submissions for an exciting new exhibition titled Holding Patterns, scheduled for October 2018. This exhibition will take place in a storage locker facility located in Toronto’s south Junction neighbourhood, animating a series of storage locker units with a wide array of art projects.

CURATORIAL FRAMEWORK:

We are looking for project submissions that will respond to and think critically about the following curatorial framework:

Recognizing the shifts, upheavals and transience that storage lockers often suggest, Holding Patterns will explore movement, space, belonging, material culture, and transition as themes that animate personal narratives and histories of place more broadly. These issues are particularly important for artists with lived experiences of site-lessness, displacement, or exclusion. In light of this, priority will be given to artists that identify as indigenous, LGBTQ+, or from visible minorities. Drawing together these varied realities of space, storage, excess, and access, Holding Patterns will explore not only the personal stories, but the histories of urban development and community migration that accompany them.

Some of the ideas which this project has inspired in its curators and which artists are invited to think critically about are:

• self-representation via the material goods one owns (the notion that storage locker contents reveal a type of “self-curation”)
• storage lockers and their contents as a metaphor for memory and/or forgetting, or consciousness and unconsciousness
• the storage locker as a receptor for a seemingly contradictory objects that range from the precious to the useless
• what do these relatively recent spaces say about consumer capitalism and the culture of materialism
• the idea that at the core of material culture and the insatiable drive to consume/possess lies a fundamental denial of mortality
• what does it mean to be “site-less” both in the literal sense of the word but also in the conceptual, more nuanced sense of being relegated to the fringes of society where one occupies a form of existential site-lessness
• the position of site-lessness as an antecedent to resistance or revolution both personal and political
• it is interesting to note that the storage locker industry is driven by short-term tenants, whose situations are defined by what the storage industry calls the Seven D’s: Death, Divorce, Disaster, Delay, Dislocations, Deliveries and Densification; how can the phenomenon of the storage locker help us to better understand these core human concepts

HOW TO SUBMIT:

Art Spin is seeking submissions from individual artists and collectives working in a variety of disciplines including but not limited to: sculpture, installation, film & video, electronic & kinetic work, painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, performance art, dance/movement and sound art. We are eager to receive submissions for new projects but are also open to reviewing existing works. Only submissions that respond to the curatorial framework, listed above, will be reviewed.

Selected artists/collectives will receive an artist fee and small budget for materials. Fees to be determined on a project-to-project basis. See guidelines for more details.

CALL to ARTISTS: VISUALEYEZ 2018: forgiveness
The 19th annual Visualeyez festival of performance art happens from 24 – 30 September 2018 in the downtown core of Edmonton, Alberta, exploring on the curatorial theme of forgiveness.

Visualeyez takes place over a period of seven days and it is required that all invited artists are able to attend for the entire length of the festival. Artists experience the work of other artists; engage in discussion groups, meals and other activities that enhance the work of individual artists and the performance art community within Canada and beyond. The public performances of the festival will be truncated over three days – Thursday to Sunday, 27 – 30 September. The time prior to thus will serve as a residency of festival artists and engagements to develop and enhance works in a rich, critical environment.

Latitude 53 will invite artists to Edmonton to explore issues around the curatorial theme of forgiveness and this curatorial thematic will afford new interactions between communities and audiences. We are seeking works that explore the fragility of the human ego and expand upon the positive nature of gestures of moving beyond and living, reconciliation, and a healing. The submissions should connect with Edmonton and Alberta residents and have resonance within an international dialogue. The festival pays a CARFAC artist fee, two-way travel and accommodations for all artists.

Proposals should include: a CV; artist statement; a detailed description of the work you wish to present, or explore; and support material all sent as individual pdfs. You can include images, video, print or digital documentation of your work or as links, pdf, or image files

OTTAWA INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL SEEKS SUBMISSIONS FOR 2018
The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF), North America’s leading animation film festival, is now accepting film entries for competition in 2018! Entries are due May 25 and there is no entry fee.

>From September 26-30, Ottawa will once again play host to the animation universe; a hub of inventive, mesmerizing, and provocative art. OIAF invites animators from around the globe to submit their recent work in the following major categories:

Animated Feature.
Narrative Animated Short.
Non-Narrative Animated Short.
Student Animation.
Commissioned Animation (series, commercials, music videos).
Young Audiences – Preschool, Ages 6-12.
VR Animation.

OIAF18 features a brand new VR animation category acknowledging and celebrating the exhilarating and pioneering work being done in Virtual Reality.

In addition to category prizes, submissions will also be considered for a variety of craft and other awards including the Festival’s Academy Award recognized Grand Prize for Short Animation. In addition, there are National competitions for Canadian animators and a Canadian student competition.

“Well, it’s that time again when Ottawa is pleasantly bombarded with a feast of animation wonders from around the globe,” says Chris Robinson, OIAF Artistic Director, “This is always an exciting time for us as we watch all the new submissions and slowly start to see the festival’s identity for the year being formed. We’re particularly excited about the brand new VR animation competition. It’s a testament to the quality of work being done in this new medium that we’ve decided it warranted a competition. Viewing and judging the VR entries will also require us to engage these projects in a whole new manner (goggles and interactivity!).”

Each year the OIAF receives more than 2,000 entries that are reviewed by the Festival’s programming team. Approximately 150 films will be chosen for Official Competition and Out-of-Competition Showcase screenings. During OIAF18, juries comprised of animation professionals, media and local kids will sit with the audience to judge the festival competition screenings.

New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) invites artists of all ages and nationalities to submit works on the theme Off The Beat(en) Track for consideration in New Adventures in Sound Art’s 2019 programming.

A year ago, NAISA staff and its board of directors decided to move the organization from Toronto to the Village of South River, ON – very much Off the Beaten Track. Sound and media art centres and dissemination points are typically in urban centres but now with greater access to and availability of digital technology, a dissemination point can be anywhere where there is internet access. NAISA’s early programming explored the connections between natural acoustic environments and media arts and so NAISA’s move to the Near North and its proximity to Algonquin Park brings it closer to its origins and provides NAISA the opportunity to present works that intersect between the natural and digital realms. NAISA’s facility, the NAISA North Media Arts Centre, functions as a hub for artists in the region to network with each other and experience NAISA’s programming, including Arts Meetups, Artist Residencies, Interactive Exhibitions and Performances, all under one roof.

For its 2019 programming, NAISA is interested in submissions that address the ideas related to the theme Off The Beat(en) Track and creative ways that this can be shared.

Preference in programming will be given to works that respond in some way to the theme Off The Beat(en) Track. Individual interpretations or variations on the theme are encouraged, but should be realized with sound as the primary component. NAISA would also like to encourage artists to submit works on the theme for performance, interactive installation exhibit, audio-visual screening, radio or internet broadcast, telematics, VR/gaming, mobile experiences and any other emerging or alternative formats that include sound as a primary element. AKA supports the creation and development of artist driven initiatives and emerging practices that speak to, reflect and encourage dialogue in our culturally diverse communities. This includes work in all media by local, national and international artists. Our venues consist of a street-level gallery, billboard and multi-use screening and performance event space; we also source off-site locations for site-specific projects.

AKA accepts submissions on an ongoing basis for project/exhibition proposals that consider AKA’s history and setting.

PROJECT SUBMISSION INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

Mercer Union is an artist-centred platform for contemporary art. Our objective is to support the creation and development of new and site-specific work, often premiering artists’ work from Canada and across the globe.

We are delighted to accept exhibition and curatorial proposals from artists, artist collectives and curators across all media for our front and/or back galleries. The submission deadline occurs once a year on 15 March.

We provide curatorial support, installation assistance, insurance, promotion, documentation, and commission critical essays to accompany selected projects and are committed to paying artist and copyright fees according to the guidelines established by CAR/FAC (Canadian Artists’ Representation/Les Fronts des Artistes Canadiens).

Each year we review a large number of submissions but unfortunately are only able to accept a small number of projects for presentation at the gallery. Your submission may also lead to a follow up studio visit with the Director of Exhibitions & Programs.

Our programming committee reviews materials within two months of the deadline  and you will be informed within a three month period. Exhibition submissions which arrive after the due date of 15 March will be held over until the next deadline.

In preparing your submission please consult the extensive archive of Mercer Union’s previous exhibitions as well as the floorplan to give an indication of the gallery spaces. We also consider off-site projects relevant to Mercer Union’s mandate.

All applications must be submitted by email by midnight, hardcopies will not be accepted.

Submissions must include, in the following order:

An Exhibition proposal (max. 500 words)
Artist statement outlining an overview of your practice/interests (max. 500 words)

Latitude 53 Contemporary Visual Culture is an artist-driven organization that thrives at the intersection of art and ideas, promoting innovation, experimentation, and dialogue, while fostering active, creative, and collaborative communities. We offer a plenitude of portals to local, national, and international contemporary art.

Through engagement and risk, Latitude 53 creates programming that explores the boundaries of contemporary art. Our programming works to build a lively and engaged artistic community and diverse audiences through an ongoing responsiveness to artists, ideas, and questions that are relevant to our community.

Latitude 53 programs two main spaces year-round, for exhibitions proposed by artists and curators from across Canada and elsewhere, including emerging to established. We seek exhibitions for these two gallery spaces (labelled the Main Space and ProjEX Room on the floor plan) that range from solo shows, to curated group projects, to works-in-progress and new developments that would benefit from constructive critical feedback. We are also interested in proposals for larger-scale projects that would inhabit both spaces, and perhaps incorporate our community gallery space, or otherwise challenge the borders and shapes of our exhibition programming.

As well as these two spaces, Latitude 53 makes available space for community-oriented programming, primarily in our smaller Community Gallery, facing onto the patio. This space is also programmed on a submission basis.

Call For Submissions – Main Gallery Spaces
For our two main spaces, artists and curators are invited to submit individual or group proposals in any media. Proposals should specifically address the space both in the format of the exhibition and as an exhibition site in the city of Edmonton and in the context of Canadian communities. Edmonton is the northernmost city of its size in Canada, and Latitude 53 specifically seeks work that will resonate with the city, push local and national dialogues further, and approach local, regional, and national identities and social politics. Proposals should also consider the idea of what is contemporary visual culture.

Latitude 53 has a non-discriminatory exhibition policy. We pay artists fees in agreement with the CARFAC schedule, pay travel, accommodation and for shipping of work.

Latitude 53 is committed to exhibiting artists at all stages of their careers, emerging or established, and to evaluating each project by its own merits. With this in mind, please take the time to consider and communicate what exhibiting here could mean to you at the current point in your practice and career. 2018 Burtynsky Grant

Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky and the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival are requesting submissions for the 2018 Burtynsky Grant—a $5,000 annual grant to support a Canadian artist in the creation of a photobook. Burtynsky generously donated his 2016 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts to create the grant and foster the careers of emerging Canadian artists.

This grant is intended to support photo-based artists who are in the advanced stages of developing a photobook. The jury is looking for submissions from those that have created a book dummy, are currently seeking funding to work with a publisher or to self-publish, and who have had little to no prior opportunity to publish a photobook. The winner and a short list of honourable mentions will be announced at the end of May 2018.

Hamilton Artists Inc. Call for Submissions
Exhibition Platforms, Special Projects, Film Festival and Residency Program

Hamilton Artists Inc. is seeking dynamic proposals from artists, collectives and curators at various stages of their careers and from across disciplines for its exhibition platforms, which include the Cannon Gallery; James Gallery; Cannon Project Wall; and ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard. The Inc. is mandated to exhibit a range of disciplines and career levels and to exhibit a cross-section of artists from local, regional and national communities. New in 2018, pending funding, we would also like to encourage the submission of “special projects.” Special Projects may include, but are not limited to, independent projects diverse in nature that may happen at the gallery or off-site and might manifest themselves through happenings, print materials, digital platforms, screenings, workshops or other forms of public presentation or intervention. The Inc. also hosts a rotating artist in residence program in partnership with the Cotton Factory and Photophobia, a film festival dedicated to contemporary moving images in partnership with the art Gallery of Hamilton.

Selections criteria are informed by the Inc.’s mandated objectives. As an artist-run centre, the Inc. is interested in works/projects that have potential impact, push boundaries and engage with critical, conceptual and/or experimental contexts from a diverse range of perspectives and voices. The Inc. supports and encourages submissions showcasing artists and curators most recent endeavors as well as works that incite conversation and promote a range of intersectional narratives. We are committed to providing a platform for risk-taking and creating an inclusive space to explore expanded art practices. We are dedicated to social and cultural diversity in our programming and encourage applications from contemporary artists and curators of diverse communities and backgrounds.

Photophobia Contemporary Moving Image Festival
Deadline: June 30, 2018

Photophobia is the 12th annual festival of short-format contemporary media, film, video and moving image hosted in partnership between the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Hamilton Artists Inc. Established in 1999, Photophobia was Hamilton’s first film and video festival dedicated to the development of experimental time-based media at a time when there were no such platforms in the Hamilton community. Not confined by restrictions or themes, Photophobia is a free festival series presented under the cover of night in the Irving Zucker Sculpture Garden at the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard at Hamilton Artists Inc. in August.

Hamilton Artists Inc. Cotton Factory Residency Program

The Hamilton Artists Inc. Cotton Factory Residency Program is a 3-month rotating artist residency for Inc. members. The residency provides a valuable opportunity for artists from a wide range of disciplines and career levels to build their practice. Participating artists are encouraged to use their time to experiment, develop new ideas and learn new skills in addition to forming meaningful ties with their fellow artists in residence, Cotton Factory tenants, and Inc. members. Hamilton Artists Inc. would like to thank the Cotton Factory for its demonstrated, ongoing commitment to fostering emerging artist practices as well as their continued contribution to Hamilton’s flourishing contemporary art community.

Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) Submission Guidelines
Exhibition proposals are accepted throughout the year and reviews are ongoing.  Selection is carried out over a period of time through studio visits and correspondence with artists and curators in whom the gallery has an interest.  Those interested in proposing their work to SAAG are asked to include with their submission: a curriculum vitae, an artist statement and/or letter of intent, a wide selection of images, and other relevant support material. Submissions should be mailed to:

The gallery will not return your submission – please do not send original artworks or valuable materials.   Given the large number of submissions received by the gallery, formal letters of reply will only be issued to proposals of immediate interest.

Exhibitions are generally six weeks in length.  An opening is held to introduce the work to the public.  Artists are also invited to give an illustrated lecture on their work in conjunction with the University of Lethbridge Faculty of Fine Art during the academic year.  Other special events (workshops, panel discussions, etc.) are considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery pays CARFAC fees, shipping and insurance, and often seeks funding to produce catalogues for the exhibition.  All publications, including our quarterly newsletter GALLERY (which discusses and reproduces work by exhibiting artists along with other programming), are exchanged with other institutions in Canada and abroad.

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery fosters the work of contemporary artists who challenge boundaries, encourages broad public engagement and promotes awareness and exploration of artistic expression.  Our work extends to local, national and international communities.
