CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS –

In an effort to nurture connection and reconnection, The James Black Gallery will be
hosting 6 Pod Residencies with local artists throughout 2021 and into 2022. Each Pod
Residency will consist of 2-6 participants for a duration of two weeks to one-month.

Pods are encouraged to generate art that delves into the problems, conflicts, sources
of collective joy and inspiration that touch our communities. Our residency includes
work space, show space, and access to our tools. In addition, a $500 honorarium will
be offered to each group, thanks to support from the City of Vancouver.

Priority will be given to QTBIPOC+ artists, artists who are frontline workers, and/or
artists experiencing the impact of isolation throughout the pandemic. Additional
requirements and information may be found in the application.

Submit Your Film to Available Light On-Demand!

Available Light On-Demand (ALD) is a strategic initiative intended to digitally distribute Yukon and northern Canadian films and media art. This service gives films a new online home among other works on an on-demand platform available to audiences around the world. Available Light On-Demand is a space for building a filmmaker’s audience and demographics through analytics and exhibition opportunities and is designed to be a one-stop shop for diverse, artist-driven Yukon and northern content.

Available Light On-Demand is a joint initiative between the Yukon Film Society and the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture and supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and Government of Yukon.

Eligibility

1. All submissions must be created by a Yukon, NWT, or Nunavut resident. Filmmakers with films that have screened at a northern Canadian film festival (ALFF, DCISFF, YFF, DNFF) or member filmmakers of either YFS or KIAC are encouraged to submit.
2. Submissions must not be freely available online in any form. Some prior SVOD and PPV distribution agreements are permissible. If your film is selected, you must be willing to remove the film from publicly-available channels.
3. Must be in English, French, or subtitled in English. Any non-English/French language films, including works in First Nations languages, are eligible but will need to be submitted with an English transcript. Please contact the ALD Distribution Coordinator if this cannot be accommodated by the filmmaker, other arrangements may be available.
4. Filmmakers must own or have cleared all rights/assets used in the submitted film. This includes music, images, logos, talent, and any other identifiable work/property in the film.

Notes

The information provided is private and will not be shared with anyone outside of the Available Light On-Demand team, including curatorial committee members. Available Light On-Demand reserves the right to keep the submission materials for subsequent editions of the initiative for future adjudication committees.

The filmmaker will be notified by the Distribution Coordinator if the future committee wishes to consider their film in subsequent years/selection windows.

Submission guidelines for ALD are subject to change. Yukon Film Society reserves the right to rule on all issues not expressly covered in these guidelines.

Works selected for distribution by ALD will be paid a licensing fee of $530 (based on IMAA recommended rates) as well as 75% of the net rental/purchase revenue of their film once the licensing fee has been recouped.

For the purposes of eligibility, ALD uses the following definitions:

Feature-Length: 60 minutes or longer  Medium-Length: 30-59 minutes  Short: under 30 minutes

Rough Cuts/Fine Cuts : ALD will only accept works for 2021/2022 that will be completed by December 31st, 2021. If needed, the Distribution Coordinator will request an updated version before December 31st and will contact those filmmakers directly.

Programming Decisions

Applicants will be notified of programming decisions via email no later than September 30^th, 2021. Final programming, categorization and scheduling of film releases will be determined by the Curatorial Committee with consideration from the Distribution Coordinator. Their decision is final.

Call for Proposals from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Artists: Temporary Mural at Daniels Building, University of Toronto

The U of T Daniels Faculty, the Daniels Art Directive (DAD) and Elder Whabagoon are issuing a Call for Proposals for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Artists living in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) to create a temporary mural on the north façade of the Daniels Building. We are answering the U of T Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action #2: “A strategy for the funding and placement of more Indigenous public art across all three campuses should be developed, in close consultation with local Indigenous communities.”

Supported By
This inaugural Indigenous mural project at the Daniels Building is guided by Elder Whabagoon, an Ojibway Elder who sits with the Loon Clan. She is a member of the Lac Seul First Nation, a Keeper of the Sacred Pipes, and a 60’s Scoop survivor. Elder Whabagoon is the inaugural First Peoples Leadership Advisor to the Dean at the Daniels Faculty.

The Daniels Art Directive (DAD) is a student-led group that creates exhibitions, workshops, and community projects. They curated the first mural on the Daniels Building: “Support Black Designers.” mural, with its designers and Daniels alumnae Ashita Parekh and Tolu Alabi, installed from October 2020 to May 2021.

The project is supported by the Daniels Faculty. We are hoping for more funding to support the Artist, the Advisory Panel, workshops, and consultations. If you’d like to support this initiative, please contact danielsartdirective [arobas] gmail [point] com.

Advisory Panel
The Indigenous Advisory Panel will select the Artist and guide the project team. We are grateful to the Advisory Panel for their guidance and service: James Bird, Melissa Deleary, Jaime Kearns, Robin Rice, Brenda Wastasecoot. The mural will contribute a greater understanding of Indigenous artistic expressions, peoples, and cultures.

Site History
The land of 1 Spadina Crescent has been the home and an important trail of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. Spadina is synonymous with Ishpadinaa, meaning “a place on a hill” from Anishinaabe.

We are currently seeking more information from researchers at the University of Toronto and other institutions about the Borden Buildings (563 & 487 Spadina Crescent) where the Borden Dairy Company invested in malnutrition experiments on Indigenous children. The North Borden Building now houses U of T’s First Nation House.

1 Spadina Crescent, now the Daniels Building, was built originally to house Knox College – a Presbyterian theological school that was run by the Presbyterian Church of Canada, who ran 11 of the 130 residential schools in Canada. We will share this deeper history of the site as we receive the information from validated sources.

I SPY… is a disposable camera mail art project created by UNIT/PITT. Inaugurated in 2020, this will be the second year of I SPY…After a turbulent year, we would like to know what you’ve seen. What have you witnessed? In your communities? Your everyday life? Your dreams? What have you not seen? What do you hope to see? 

Six selected participants will be mailed disposable cameras with return postage. Each individual will be given a unique crowd-sourced prompt that begins, “I spy with my little lens…” Participants will have one month to photograph whatever they choose, as long as one photograph in their roll responds directly to the prompt. Nine photographs from each roll will be published to UNIT/PITT’s website and social media, and selected for consideration in a future exhibition.

Applications will be juried by U/P’s Programming Committee. Successful applicants will receive $500, and high-resolution scans of their photographs.

Who can apply:

This program is open to post-secondary and graduate students from any area of study, and emerging and early career artists and cultural practitioners.* Eligible applicants must currently reside on or have strong connections to the unceded land belonging to the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations, also known as Vancouver BC.

*Borrowing this definition from the British Columbia Arts Council, an emerging and early career artist or cultural practitioner is someone under 30 years of age, or someone who has completed a peer-recognized basic training in their discipline or art form within the last five years.

The New Works Grant is a project-based initiative aimed at supporting underrepresented
artists in our community. This year marks the second iteration of this initiative which, with
the generous partnership of Telus Storyhive, will award 4 peer adjudicated grants of
$2500 for Black filmmakers living on the unceded lands known as British Columbia.

Projects can vary from short to feature, from scripted to doc, from experimental to
animation. The funds are intended to support artist fees while working on a new project
but can be used as seen fit by the artist. Applications are open now until August 1st,
2021.

Collaborative team “Jeju Island” and Flux Factory are excited to announce an open call for the exhibition Survival Tools for the Age of Ultra Anxiety. 

This exhibition takes as its premise the state of ultra-anxiety our culture is functioning within due to the pandemic and worldwide social and economic upheaval. It questions whether our endlessly competitive society, which rewards selfish behavior over altruism, has given us the tools needed to survive or whether artists are needed to lead us away from the brink of extinction.

This group exhibition proposes physical, emotional and psychological survival through the adoption of tactics, methods and tools central to artistic creation but commonly marginalized by societies focused on expediency and short-term financial profit. Through tactics, gadgets, gizmos, interactive machinery, and video narratives a course forward will be explored that values and utilizes unfettered imagination, rampant invention, irrational systems, dream logic, humor and the impossible. This exhibition depends upon and makes the case for a world built on the notion that things are not fixed in their identities but are mutable and can be changed.

For the second year, LA SERRE – arts vivants offers a collective nomadic artistic residency program. Conceived as a collaborative research process, this laboratory stands as an intersectorial resourcing space based on expertise exchange and creation of ideas.

Through several meetings and activities spread throughout the year, the residency program invites eight live art practitioners to develop the prototype of an artistic project at the junction of several disciplines, knowledges and/or know-hows. Inspired from a working method developed together with L’Amicale de production, the creation of a prototype stands as an intermediary step in a creation process, which can open up unexpected and unusual bifurcations.

TORONTO, le 8 juill. 2021 /CNW/ – La Fiducie du patrimoine ontarien accepte désormais les candidatures au Programme des artistes en résidence Doris McCarthy pour 2022. Les périodes de résidence sont disponibles tout au long de l’année 2022, avec des durées flexibles allant de un à trois mois. La date limite de candidature est le 30 septembre 2021.

Ce programme est ouvert aux artistes professionnels canadiens pratiquant un large éventail de disciplines. Les artistes auront l’occasion de vivre et de créer dans le cadre naturel inspirant du Centre des artistes en résidence Doris McCarthy, appelé le « Paradis d’une folle », les anciens studio et maison de la célèbre paysagiste canadienne Doris McCarthy.

Situé sur les falaises Scarborough à Toronto, le « Paradis d’une folle » offre un environnement tranquille aux artistes qui cherchent à s’évader, à se ressourcer et à se concentrer sur leur art – dans le sanctuaire où Doris McCarthy habitait.

Le programme et l’utilisation du « Paradis d’une folle » permet à la Fiducie d’illustrer les nouvelles utilisations créatives et dynamiques des espaces patrimoniaux. Dans le cadre de la période de résidence, les artistes sont tenus d’offrir du mentorat pour favoriser le développement d’un ou de plusieurs artistes émergents.

Doris McCarthy a fait don de sa maison à la Fiducie en 1998 dans l’intention expresse de permettre à d’autres artistes d’avoir la même possibilité de vivre et de travailler sur le site qui a tant favorisé sa propre expression artistique. Elle y a vécu jusqu’à sa mort en 2010. La Fiducie a lancé le Programme des artistes en résidence en 2015 pour mettre en valeur l’héritage artistique et culturel de Doris McCarthy en montrant la valeur inspiratrice du paysage et en promouvant l’excellence dans les domaines de l’art, de la musique et de l’écriture canadiens. À ce jour, la Fiducie a accueilli 43 artistes au « Paradis d’une folle ».

La Fiducie accepte les demandes d’artistes pratiquant diverses disciplines créatives, ainsi que d’artistes issus de milieux sous-représentés. Ce programme est généreusement soutenu par le projet Artistes émergents RBC.

Faits en bref :

Doris McCarthy (1910-2010) était l’un des paysagistes canadiens les plus renommés de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, qui a travaillé dans sa maison, le « Paradis d’une folle », pendant près de 70 ans.
Mme McCarthy a fait don du « Paradis d’une folle » à la Fiducie du patrimoine ontarien en 1998 afin d’en préserver les valeurs pittoresques, esthétiques, naturelles et culturelles, en souhaitant qu’après sa mort, il devienne un centre de résidence pour les artistes et un lieu d’activités patrimoniales.
À ce jour, 43 artistes ont obtenu des résidences au « Paradis d’une folle ».
La Fiducie œuvre avec la galerie Doris McCarthy (Université de Toronto à Scarborough), l’Université de l’EADO, l’Ontario Society of Artists et la Writer’s Union of Canada à la conception du programme.

Call for Mural Artists for Haliburton’s Wall of Sports Heroes

Submission deadline: August 13, 2021 at 3:00 pm

The Municipality of Dysart et al is requesting proposals and quotations from artists to create murals on the Wall of Sports Heroes on the the A. J. LaRue Community Centre in the village of Haliburton.

Haliburton is well known for its hockey players, but we are also home to athletes with extraordinary talents in other sports.

Our community wants to honour Lesley Tashlin, Haliburton’s first Olympian, representing Canada in the sprint hurdles and relay in the 1986 Olympics and Taly Williams, the first graduate from Haliburton Highlands Secondary School and University of Waterloo to play in the CFL. with murals on the Wall of Sports Heroes.

 

Each mural will be 12 ft in height and 18.5 feet in width. The murals will be painted on panels which will be mounted on the wall. Images of the athletes provided.

Haliburton is located approximately 210 km northeast of Toronto in what is often known as “cottage country” The village of Haliburton, with a beautiful location on Head Lake, surrounded by forested hills, is also known as a centre for the arts, home to the Haliburton School of Art and Design and the Haliburton Sculpture Forest.

PROJECT SUMMARY/ART OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW
The Woodstock Hospital invites artists residing in Ontario to submit expressions of interest and qualifications to create a permanent public artwork to be displayed in the Woodstock Hospital Courtyard (Lower Level), located in the City of Woodstock, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the new hospital.

The successful artist(s) will create permanent work to be displayed that will:

• Reflect the Hospitals Mission, Vision and Values
• Be original artwork (preexisting sculptures will be considered)
• Be easily maintained (must consider seasonal change)

The Woodstock Hospital located in the City of Woodstock is situated on the traditional territories of the Indigenous Peoples and covered by the Upper Canada Treaties. The sculpture will be located in the Woodstock Hospital Courtyard (lower Level) which is a common outdoor space that is open to staff, patients and visitors. The installed artwork form and materials should not impede movement or pose any safety concerns. The artwork must also be robust enough and made with material to withstand the normal fluctuations of Ontario weather.

BUDGET
The budget for the design, fabrication of the artwork will be $10,000 and must cover ALL expenses related to the projects, including (but not limited to) artist fee(s); materials; fabrication; insurance; installation; documentation; travel to and from the site.

ARTIST ELIGIBILITY
This is a provincial-wide call for proposals. Professional* artists and/or artist-led teams** residing in Ontario are encouraged to apply.

* Professional artist is defined as a person who is critically recognized as an artist; possesses skill, training and/or experience in their artistic discipline; is active in and committed to their art practice; and has a history of public presentation.

** Artist-led teams must share the total commission of $10,000.

SELECTION PROCESS and CRITERIA
Expressions of Interest will be reviewed by a Selection Committee at Woodstock Hospital comprised of art consultants/artists, Woodstock Hospital and Woodstock Hospital Foundation Board members, the Woodstock Hospital CEO and the Foundation Senior Development Officer.

The artist(s) selected for the final commission will be required to enter into an agreement with the Woodstock Hospital which will contain provisions including but not limited to rights of ownership and use and will include a warranty period up to 12 months covering all workmanship defects, accidental and environmental damage. The completed artwork will be the property of the Woodstock Hospital but the moral and copy rights remain with the artist(s). Complete applications must be received in the office or by email on or before Monday August 9, 2021 at 4:00pm (not a post-marked deadline). Incomplete, late or faxed applications will not be accepted.

APPLICATION DELIVERY and RECEIPT
All supporting materials must accompany the application. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be accepted. Faxed applications will not be accepted. The Woodstock Hospital and Woodstock Hospital Foundation will not be responsible for applications lost in transit. While all reasonable care will be taken in the handling of materials, the Woodstock Hospital and Woodstock Hospital Foundation will not take responsibility for lost or damaged materials.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure the signed complete application package reaches the Woodstock Hospital Foundation by the deadline. All applicants will receive a notice by e-mail that their application has been received. If you have submitted an application and do not receive notification by August 11th, 2021 please contact the Woodstock Hospital Foundation.

Vision du projet
Dans le cadre de la première phase du Plan d’art public pour le chemin de Montréal et Vanier, le portail servira de point de repère et correspondra à l’entrée ouest du quartier Vanier. L’œuvre doit faire état du passé, du présent et de l’avenir exceptionnels du quartier et en représenter la créativité, la résilience et l’exceptionnelle diversité. La conception de l’œuvre doit être sécuritaire pour le public, être sécuritaires pour le public, donc il est déconseillé d’installer des œuvres qui offrent des endroits où se cacher ou qui sont difficiles à voir. L’oeuvre doit être représentative du site en tenant compte de la rivière Rideau voisine et en s’illustrant parmi les nouveaux aménagements résidentiels et commerciaux attenants.

In partnership with the German Federal Horticulture Show—BUGA 23—the Land Art Generator will launch a transformative renewable energy design challenge in March of 2022 with $40,000 in prize awards. As a part of the German Bundesgartenschau (BUGA 23) that will open in Mannheim in 2023, the latest LAGI design challenge brings together a number of themes and ideas for inspiration.
 
Just as a garden is a productive landscape for nourishment that also brings us joy and pleasure, how can we re-imagine our energy landscapes so that they too bring joy and pleasure for our communities?
 
LAGI 2022 will invite proposals for renewable energy systems designed with a social lens for a range of scales around the City of Mannheim—from the private garden to the city square.
 
LAGI 2022 Mannheim will expand what is possible using existing clean energy technologies to create beautiful, sculptural modules that can plug into the smart postcarbon city.

 
Selected design entries to LAGI 2022 Mannheim will be included in a new book to be published by HIRMER and featured in an exhibition at BUGA 23 with expected attendance in the millions. The top two designs as chosen by the jury will receive cash awards of $30,000 and $10,000 USD.
 

 
More about BUGA 23
The German federal garden show (“BUGA”*= short for “Bundesgartenschau”) will be taking place in Mannheim from April through to October 2023. BUGA 23 is a lot more than just a flower show: It will improve the sustainable quality of life and lifestyle in Mannheim. Over seven Kilometers long, a stretch of green, will create new places to walk, play and relax, at the same time improving the city’s air quality and climate. BUGA is also part of Mannheim`s North East Green Corridor Project, connecting 230 hectares of green areas forming a corridor stretching into the city centre.

One major highlight will be a 2 km long overhead cable car system spanning the river Neckar, and connecting Luisenpark with the new BUGA-Grounds.

Creating a healthy environment for Mannheim’s future, climate-neutral in harmony with the natural environment, BUGA 23 is an innovative experimental field for living together in the city sustainably. It complies with the UN Sustainability goals which are incorporated in Mannheim`s mission statement for 2030. Solutions to problems and challenges of our time will be explored relating to climate, the environment, sustainable agricultural production and food security.
