FADO Call for Submissions: Misinformed Informants: Emerging Practices Series 2009

Misinformed Informants
Curated by Lisa Visser

TORONTO and REGIONAL CALL FOR PERFORMANCE PROPOSALS
Deadline for submissions: October 1, 2009 (postmark)

With an uncontested authority of communication also comes a loss of more antiquated forms of attraction and
distractions: for example, the telegraph, the dial phone, a meaningful touch. Nostalgia for these former arts is
maintained in a romanticized thought, where a world of convenience abandons the need for a hand-written letter,
expressive and clear, sweetly scented and discreetly passed from the lover to the loved. Rather, instructions on how to
make eye contact and intonate clearly, write concise and connected emails, without emoticons, are how we learn
communication procedure. What did we lose when we lost the art of communication? How will I know he loves me if
he doesn’t write it in a letter? Conversational tone is often mistranslated through the digital media. Though sometimes
the process of communication is lost the participants may deduce the correct result. Yet, nothing ensures
comprehension and so there is inevitable lost emails, missed phone calls, unreceived text messages, poorly stressed
intonations: miscommunications and misinformed informants.

Talking and laughing, body language, facial expressions, huffs and sighs, digital dialogue, instant messaging,
translation among languages and generations, silence and deliberate motions, yelling, whispering, texting.

Framework: FADO invites submissions for performance works from emerging or early career artists that speak to modes
and moods of communication and miscommunication as a starting point for their work. We encourage both shorter
and longer works, durational or multi-day projects.

The event and exhibition will take place in Toronto in early December (location and dates to be confirmed). This event
will highlight new work by emerging artists. Please remember this is a Toronto and regional call only. We are not able
to bring artists in from national or international cities, as much as we would like to. We are looking for work from
artists from Toronto and surrounding areas, as well as London, Kingston, Montreal, Ottawa etc. The performance will
be introduced in an opening event of the exhibition, with ephemera, debris and documentation on display throughout
the week following the performance event.

Submissions must include:
• Artist CV
• A statement describing your practice
• 15-20 jpeg images and/or a 10minute video
• A descriptive list for your images
• Any written documentation to accompany your images
• SASE (packages will not be returned unless this is included)

Please contact the curator before sending an email submission. If you are going to send an email submission, it is
advisable to send hard copies of the documents as well.

Moscow international Biennale for Young Art
Deadline: November 1st, 2009
‘Qui vive?’ Moscow International Biennale for Young Art is one of the largest and most ambitious projects on the Moscow art scene in the field of contemporary art. The Biennale unites creative initiatives from all over Russia and foreign countries. The leading art centers of Moscow in collaboration with regional and foreign partners take an active part in this event.
The key criterion for curator’s choice is not the age of the artists (under 35), but the stadium of their creative activity, the spirit of young art and its active passion in search of new vision and method. We say ‘Qui vive?’ to the young artists calling them to stop their ‘Brownian movement’ for a moment and to think where do they go and articulate their artistic and conceptual positions.
The theme of the 2-nd Biennale ‘QUI VIVE?’ – a phenomenon of BORDERS and its possible interpretations. We consider logical to talk about borders after the slogan «Qui vive?», the invariable motto of the Biennale.
Application rules
Moscow Biennale digital applications, according to a set form, are accepted online by the Biennale organizers from May 22 until November 1, 2009.
The online application forms are available in the Biennale official website: www.youngart.ru
The artworks of Russian and international artists (under 35 years of age), who work in the field of the contemporary art, using innovative strategies, concepts and technologies (personal, group or as a part of the curatorial projects), can be submitted for participation in the Biennale. The authors, who have not shown their works in the large solo exhibitions, are most preferable.
The project authors (artists and curators, in case of the curatorial project) and non-profit artistic institutions are entitled to apply for participation.
Each application form is to be accompanied by one or several images (jpeg or tif, exactly no less than 300 dpi resolution, min. dimensions: 10×15 cm).
The completed and exhibited projects as well as incomplete ones, the projects in the detailed draft stage may be applied for participation in the Biennale. There are no limitations in number, form, genre, technique or theme.
Application is free of charge. Authors and curators are not paid royalties. All rights are reserved to the authors. Artwork financing and exhibition budgeting are not guaranteed by the Biennale organizers, but they will do their best to reimburse the authors for project costs as much as possible. Payment of traveling and accommodation expenses of the participants from other towns and countries will depend on the possibilities of the Biennale organizers; the participants whose attendance is required for the project realization (authors of performances, complex installations, etc.) will have priority.
Applying to the Biennale, in case if his artwork will be selected to participate, the author agrees that:
- text materials, contained in the application form, will be used in the Biennale catalogue and press materials;
- images, enclosed to the application form, will be used in the Biennale catalogue and press materials.
Application deadline: November 1, 2009.
The group of curators will examine all applications, select participants and form preliminary structure of the Biennale. The Biennale participants will be announced no later than April 1, 2010.
Co-curators: Daria Pyrkina and Daria Kamyshnikova – curators [arobas] youngart [point] ru
Executive director: Olga Lopukhova – direct [arobas] youngart [point] ru
