CALL FOR WORKS: IA Current Exhibition
Curated by Talia Golland

Deadline: July 8, 2022 (11:59pm EDT)

Curated by Talia Golland, the 2022 IA Current exhibition will explore themes of digital materiality: the embodied and tactile experiences of using consumer technology, the physical infrastructures that support the internet, and the physical experiences mediated, referenced, and suggested through the intrinsic metaphors of digital space.

A call for works is now open for projects which draw aesthetic, material, and metaphoric lines of connection between digital and physical spaces, objects, and experiences. Artists working across new media and hybrid practices are invited to apply, with a particular interest in installation-based work in which new media techniques are combined with other mediums.

Questions for consideration:

What architectures, spaces, and objects are suggested by the visual and operational metaphors of past and present personal computer technologies and devices?
What are the physical actions and movements implied by and/or involved in the search, the scroll, the point and click, the copy+paste?
What new dynamics of spectatorship are constructed when interface imagery and digital objects are untethered from monitors and screens, reconfigured spatially and/or recreated materially?
What are the affective, emotional associations of the aesthetics of the earlier internet(s)?
Within the delineated structures of current and bygone operating systems, where can we locate personal experiences, memories, archives?
Keywords:

internet aesthetics, digital imagery, embodied experience, personal archives, consumer technology, interfaces, networked infrastructure, space, materiality, memory, nostalgia

Submission Requirements:

Project description (<250 words)
Artist statement (<250 words)
Documentation (maximum 5 images and 1 video; please provide URLS)
A detailed description of anticipated technical requirements (please outline materials provided by the artist and materials expected from InterAccess)
Current CV (<3 pages)
Artist biography (<100 words)
Please send your submissions to iacurrent [arobas] interaccess [point] org using the subject line “IA Current Artwork Submission”.

This exhibition will prioritize members of marginalized and equity-seeking groups, and we especially invite applications from BIPOC and 2SLGBTQ+ artists.

We recognize that the application process involves free labour which can create barriers. If you have questions about applying, or require accommodations, please contact iacurrent [arobas] interaccess [point] org.

Exhibition Details:

This exhibition will take place at InterAccess (950 Dupont St., Unit 1, Toronto) from September 7 – October 8, 2022
Selected artists will be notified in mid-July 2022
All artworks must be ready for exhibition by August 11, 2022
All participating artists will receive a CARFAC fee

The InterAccess Current (IA Current) program supports the professional development of emerging curators and artists interested in new media and electronic practices. Each year, InterAccess selects an emerging curator, who works closely with InterAccess staff to conceptualize and execute an exhibition of works by emerging artists. “Current” refers to the now, of course, but it is also an energetic charge that causes light, heat and all manner of electronic life; an apt metaphor for emergent creative practices within the ever-expanding field of new media.

Founded in 1983, InterAccess is a non-profit gallery, educational facility, production studio, festival, and registered charity dedicated to emerging practices in art and technology. Our programs support art forms that integrate technology, fostering and supporting the full cycle of art and artistic practice through education, production, and exhibition. InterAccess is regarded as a preeminent Canadian arts and technology centre.

In 2021 Copenhagen Contemporary was awarded the biggest Scandinavian art prize, the Bikuben Foundation’s Vision Exhibition Award, for the winning project Yet, It Moves!—a visionary research project and public art exhibition in Copenhagen that investigate the interconnected movements across scales, from the micro—to the macrocosmos.

In connection with Yet, It Moves!, CC now launches an open call for artists, architects, designers, curators, landscape architects or others who are in any way professionally engaged in art or architecture in the public space to send us proposals for two kinds of contributions.

With this call we open the project and its implementation to artists whose research has investigated or is currently exploring themes related to the interface between art and science like the ones we are keen to research in Yet, It Moves!

You can find all the information on the Open Call here.

About Yet, It Moves!
The project is realized in collaboration with four scientific research partners: DARK at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen, Arts at CERN in Geneva, The Interacting Minds Centre at Aarhus University, and the Program in Performance Studies and ModLab (Digital Humanities Laboratory) University of California, Davis.

The project’s groundbreaking vision, its course and artistic product consist in bringing the overlapping spheres of interest between artists and scientists into play. Thus initiating new research by exchanging different perspectives and exploring paths that combine the different methods and perspectives. As a result Yet, It Moves! will unfold through a series of decentralized art installations shown at different locations in Copenhagen from May to October 2023, creating opportunities for people to encounter contemporary art in new ways as the art will live in the city interacting with people on a daily base.

A city on the move
There are millions of movements taking place simultaneously in the cosmos: from the explosion of Supernovae to the constant expansion of our universe, the incessant movement of neutrinos and nuclear fusion. The universe is filled with unstoppable movement from the macro to the micro level. The human brain can barely grasp them, but these movements exist no matter whether we acknowledge them or not. With this open call we want to compare the city to a microcosmos where many different movements and lives co-exist simultaneously, going in many different directions. This is something people may not reflect upon on a daily basis, but something that this project would like to showcase letting it be reflected and imprinted on the city.

The proposals will be accepted from July 1-September 1, 2022.
Deadline for submission: September 1, 2022, at midnight.
Proposals should be be sent through this link.

StreetARToronto (StART) invites street, mural and graffiti artists or artist collectives to participate in the 2022 Just Us Art Project.
StART has received requests from artists interested in doing more projects in support of Black Lives Matter and justice for Indigenous Peoples. In response, this “Just Us” Art Call is for concepts for mural projects or activations that highlight social injustice, equity, race relations and community engagement. StART is collaborating with NIA Centre for the Arts and 7th Generation Image Makers for the 2022 Just Us Art Project.

StreetARToronto programs and projects are designed to celebrate the City of Toronto motto “Diversity Our Strength” and foster a greater sense of belonging among all. StART welcomes and actively seeks out partners for initiatives that support and reflect these values.

Artists interested in applying to this program can do so by visiting this submittable link.

StreetARToronto Just Us Art Project Requirements

For this Request for Concept Descriptions, the City of Toronto is seeking submissions from street, mural and graffiti artists or artist collectives who have access to a wall exposed to city streets with written authorization from the property owner granting the artist permission to paint their mural concept on the wall.

All projects must be located in Toronto.

The goal of this Request for Concept Descriptions is to establish a roster of projects eligible to participate in the StART “Just Us” Art Project. An Advisory Panel will select up to 10 projects from the roster to receive up to $3,000 toward the creation of their project.

Background and Objectives

“Just Us” art call is a request for mural art proposals in support and recognition of Black lives and the rights of Indigenous Peoples, produced by StreetARToronto (StART) in collaboration with Nia Centre for the Arts and 7th Generation Imagemakers. The “Just Us” art call seeks mural concepts that create awareness surrounding social injustice, equity, race relations and community engagement. Project proposals should speak to historic and current social issues and movements within Black, Indigenous and BIPOC communities, and the importance, benefits and opportunities to build a better future through inclusion, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

About StreetARToronto
StreetARToronto (StART) is a suite of innovative programs specifically designed for streets and public spaces, and has been successful in working with artists to produce vibrant, meaningful, community engaged street mural and graffiti art. StART programs encourage active transportation (walking and cycling), make our streets more inviting and safe, showcase local artists, mentor emerging talent, and create opportunities for positive engagement among residents, business, artists, arts organizations and City staff. While based on themes relevant to local sites and neighborhoods, StART artworks and artists also reflect the City of Toronto motto: Diversity Our Strength and foster a greater sense of belonging among all. An initiative of the City of Toronto, Transportation Services Division, StART has become a leader in significant mural, street and graffiti art installations since its inception in 2012.

Dossier no 269 « Les sensorialités incarnées de l’art » / Vie des arts
11 juillet 2022

Appel de textes | Call For papers

No. 107 : Famille
